Fishing LinksKids Here are some of the segments from the Best For Kids section of our weekly report highlighting ideal areas for taking the kids! If you have a spot you would like to share with other subscribers contact TGF. Fishing Locations for Families - Timber Linn in Albany is a good choice as it adjoins Timber Linn Park which offers picnic and rest facilities as well as playground equipment for kids who lose patience with the fish. It's stocked in spring and summer with state-raised rainbows and also offers a warm-water fishery with bass and panfish present. Don't be put off by the bleachers; this is also the site of the Albany Timber Carnival log-rolling competition. Tenmile Lake, with it's large County Park facility and huge boat ramp bodes well for both families and serious anglers. Those who would chase the largemouth bass will find a good top water bite in the morning and fish co-operating on soft plastics along the weed-lines during the day at this time of year. There's also a good population of bluegill for kids of all ages to catch. I still recall travelling with my folks and my younger sister to Tillamook Bay when I was a kid. Opportunities to entertain the kids abound in the area, from easy fishing and crabbing in the bay to the Marine Science Center and Oregon Coast Aquarium. Camping facilities are available in Tillamook at KOA and at Barview just North of Garibaldi. Find the old pictures of Bay Ocean at the Barview store and fire the kid's imagination about a town that the ocean washed away. Travel to the South side of the bay & explore Cape Meares State Park and take advantage of the surf fishing possibilities. Families could spend a week together here and still not run out of activities. Be sure to visit both the cheese factories, the Octopus Tree, the Museum .... This week will find the State of Oregon delivering farm-raised rainbows to Cape Meares Lake, Hebo Lake, South Lake and Town Lake, so Hebo Lake is the pick of the week for a family destination. With facilities for picnicking and easy access even for those with physical disabilities, this is a charming and enjoyable place to take the kids for early angling experiences with a quarry that's not too challenging. The kids will get a kick out of the bountiful waterdog population as well. Visit the lovely hamlet of Vernonia and get a pleasant surprise; a 40-acre lake right in the middle of town, complete with facilities for the family. Picnicking, overnight tent camping and restrooms are available in addition to the bountiful population of bass, crappie, yellow perch, catfish and stocked trout. Boats are allowed but no gas motors, please. The local Isaac Walton League, after many years of requests was finally granted money made possible through the State of Oregon R & E Board which the City of Vernonia matched 10% for the construction of docks which, while open to everyone, are also accessible to those with physical disabilities. Chuck Cradit, owner of Bridge Street Bait and Tackle in Vernonia (503-429-0924, blade_twister@vernonia.com) can fill you in on what's biting and how to catch 'em. Ask him to show your kids the 10-pound bass that he caught out of the lake. That should fire 'em up! Try Coffenbury Lake or Junction City Pond this weekend as a place for kids to learn PowerBait techniques. Both have been stocked with surplus winter steelhead so the rewards may be very great for a young angler. Rig with a size 14 or 16 treble hook on a four-pound leader 30 inches long (main line doesn't matter). run a one-quarter ounce egg sinker up the main line and tie on a swivel, then the leader. Use enough PowerBait to just cover the hook completely and roll it between the palms of you hands, then work it around the hook. Check to make sure it floats, then cast it out. Reel until the weight can be felt, then set the rod down either in a forked stick or against a cooler, allowing a foot or two of slack in the line. Since it's a slip sinker, the fish will feel no resistance, will take the bait with abandon and once the line is tight will hook himself. Kids go nuts; adults grin; life is good.
