Kalama Report Things have been warming up on the Kalama. When I visited last Sunday, the river was busy. I chit chatted with several groups of fishermen. There was some success between them with a total of three Steelhead retained. During my visit to the Kalama on Sunday around 9:00am it was very busy. Most bank spots had active fisherman and many drift boats on the river. There were 5 boats alone working the Prichard area. Cowlitz Report The Smelt are back along with the onslaught of pinnipeds. It appears there won’t be a Smelt sport dip at all. Fishing pressure continues to be extremely heavy and boat traffic is high, especially in the Blue Creek area. Steelhead fishing for the next couple of weeks is probably as good as it will get. The escapement totals dropped from the previous week, but fishing success increased. Dave Mallahan with Daves Guide Service had a great week. Fishing was much better. Boat traffic is rough, as it’s busy but he’s getting fish.

by Ian Carter The Cowlitz has leveled off, not taking off.  Anglers are beginning to pay a little more attention to the lower Columbia despite the lack of Chinook traversing the dam.  Those intercepting fish on the Columbia are doing so fishing downstream from the Multnomah channel by St Helens.  REMINDER, please verify the regulations before…

SW Washington fishing report for March 4

Posted on March 4, 2023March 4, 2023 by Ian Carter

Merwin remains the single most reported bright spot in SW Washington fishing.  WDFW angler checks this week didn’t convey any effort or success for our tributaries except for the Cowlitz.  Most area rivers should be approaching the new normal for peak winter Steelhead this month.  I’m most looking forward to the Cowlitz run size coming…

SW Washington fishing report for Feb 25

Posted on February 25, 2023February 25, 2023 by Ian Carter

A much-anticipated action notice regarding mainstem Columbia River spring Chinook recreational fishery has been released. There has been no positive change in reports for area rivers as Merwin continues to be the place to catch dinner. Thousands of pinnipeds cruising the entire lower Columbia currently doesn’t bode well for Steelhead returning to our tributaries. WDFW didn’t…
