Spring chinook are probably the highest quality salmon that swims in our waters. They are highly sought after because of their high flavor content and superior fighting ability. Spring chinook begin to enter Tillamook County bays and rivers in early April. These fish do not spawn until the early fall and for this reason, they enter fresh water with an exceptionally high fat content so they can over summer in fresh water in healthy condition. This fat content is what gives them their exceptional flavor for grilling, baking, poaching or smoking to name just a few. It may take several trips before you catch one of these great prizes but it is well worth the wait!
